Museo ThyssenThe best of painting of the western civilisation from the Middle Ages to the 1970s. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, comprising nearly 800 works, is one of the most important private collections of the western world. Palacio RealThe Royal Palace of Madrid is actually owned by the King of Spain. It was built on the site of a former Alcazar that burned down in 1734 and it was completed after 26 years of works. 50 of its 2800 rooms are open to public.
Centro de Arte Moderno Reina SofiaAnother interesting museum nearby is the Reina Sofia Museum. It contains a large selection of modern art works: videos, sculptures, paintings, music and more. It is an interesting experience.
Catedral de la AlmudenaAlthough the construction of the Almudena Cathedral did not start until the 19th century, its story begins in the 16th century, when the king of Spain decided that Madrid was going to be the Spanish capital city (1561). He thought that it needed a Cathedral, but it was only during the reign of Felipe IV (17th century), when Elisabeth of Borbon, the king's wife, donated the necessary money to build a Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin of the Almudena.
