Area Attractions
Plaza de Espana, Catedral de AlmudenaAlthough the construction of the Almudena Cathedral did not start until the 19th century, its story begins in the 16th century, when the king of Spain decided that Madrid was going to be the Spanish capital city (1561). He thought that it needed a Cathedral, but it was only during the reign of Felipe IV (17th century), when Elisabeth of Borbon, the king's wife, donated the necessary money to build a Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin of the Almudena. However, the works did not start until 1883, and the Cathedral was finally consecrated only in 1993.
Palacio RealThe Royal Palace was built on the site where once stood the Alcazar of Madrid, the famous castle built at the end of the 9th century during the reign of Mohammed I, Emir of Cordoba, as a key position for the defense of the territories north of Toledo. In the 16th century Charles V and Philip II rebuilt it as a Royal Palace, and in 1561 the Alcazar became the permanent residence of the Kings.
Museo Thyssen-BornemiszaThe best western painting from the Middle Ages to the 1970s. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, comprising nearly 800 works, is one of the most important private collections of Western art. Collected during two generations by Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and his son, Hans-Heinrich, this knockout collection was permanently installed in Madrid in 1992 and has since then enjoyed great success and critical acclaim.
