Museo de El Prado

The Prado Museum is renown as being one of the largest art galleries in the world. It also exhibits sculptures, drawings, coins and other works of arts, but it is undoubtedly its large collection of paintings which has granted it its worldwide fame. It houses more than 8,600 paintings, of which less than 2,000 are shown to public because of lack of space. Many museums throughout the world have less artistic riches in their halls than the Prado Museum has in storage.

Palacio Real

This impressive palace, with 870 windows, 240 balconies, 44 sets of stairs and 110 doors is, beyond any doubt, worth a visit. It covers an area of 135,000 square metres, the same of the old Alcazar of the Hapsburgs, which in the Christmas of 1734 was destroyed by a fire. Four years later, during the reign of Ferdinand VI, its reconstruction began according to the project drawn by Juan Bautista Sachetti, with the collaboration of Ventura Rodriguez, Sabatini, and Father Scirmiento. This time wood was used only for the doors, not even the ceiling of the vaults is flammable.

Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is the heart of the city: it is in theory the starting point of all Spanish roads (km zero). Around this bustling and gigantic junction of 8 streets there are a many shops and interesting places to visit, such as the square Plaza Mayor.

Teatro Real

The Royal theatre has just been re-built and it stands in front of the Royal Palace, also called the Orient Palace.
